The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) recently approved Austin Light Rail’s final environmental impact statement, confirming that the project is compliant with federal regulations. While FTA’s approval doesn’t guarantee federal funding for half of the $8 billion project cost, it signifies that the project is on track, enabling Austin Transit Partnership (ATP) to advance design, construction plans and property acquisitions for the 9.8-mile transit system.

Austin Light Rail Anticipated Timeline:

  • 2026: Finalize design, select construction partners and begin early construction plans for utilities
  • 2027: Begin light rail construction and begin eminent domain proceedings
  • 2033: Complete project construction and open to the public

The project will span across 85 acres, taking 27 parcels and 261 partial sites. It will also displace 71 businesses. Fortunately, residential displacements along Riverside Drive will no longer be required as previously thought (Austin Light Rail Project Moves Forward While Businesses and Homes Face Displacement).

ATP plans to financially assist displaced businesses, but this process is often complicated and confusing. If you are a property owner whose business is facing displacement for Austin Light Rail, it is crucial to understand your property rights. An eminent domain and condemnation lawyer can help you better understand how to evaluate your full property value, including all remainder damages and moving costs.
