I-45 to Kick off Construction This Year Upon the Conclusion of Public Meetings

The $9.7 billion I-45 North Houston Highway Improvement Project (NHHIP) is slated to continue as planned after a series of public meetings held in December 2023. This year, $150 million worth of work will begin construction on a small portion of the project near downtown Houston, but the rest of the project isn’t expected to be complete until 2046.

The project received significant backlash since its conception over a decade ago for its displacement of 1,300 properties. During a federal civil rights investigation and related litigation, the project experienced delays for several years. As a result of the litigation, TxDOT agreed to host additional community input meetings, allocate $30 million toward displaced landowners, incorporate more green space, and include walking and biking paths into the plan to get more community members on board with the project.

Despite the mobility updates to the plan, the number of impacted landowners will remain the same. View December’s meeting materials here to learn more about what was discussed.
